When a bonus disappears: expiry, inactivity and withdrawal compared

A bonus can disappear when a date passes, when the account sits idle, or when you take money out. How each broker words these conditions.

When a bonus disappears

A bonus can disappear even after you have received it. It helps to split the ways into three: a set date arrives (expiry), the account sits unused (inactivity), or you take money out (withdrawal). This article lines up those three using what the terms of the offers running now say. Amounts and rates appear only in the tables, not in the text, because brokers change them. Day counts are written in the text, because they are needed to read a clause.

The bonus is offered by each broker, not by this site. What is compared here is not which company is better, but where in the terms a “condition that removes the bonus” is written. Companies are in name order, not in ranking order. Where an item is missing from the data, the article says “not in the data” and does not fill the gap with a guess.

At the time of writing, the English tables hold 3 no-deposit offers and 7 deposit offers. The Japanese version of this article has more rows (6 and 10), and the difference has three reasons in the data. Offers marked as for residents of Japan appear only in the Japanese version. Tickmill’s no-deposit offer lists Japan among the countries it is not available in, so it appears only in the English tables. AXIORY and Milton Markets are listed as separate offers for each language, and each appears only in its own language.

The end date column shows only the dates that could be read from the offer’s page. An end date written only in the terms may leave that column empty. An empty column does not mean there is no end date.

The clocks that can run on a bonus

“Expiry” is not one clock. The offer itself can end on a date, each bonus can be valid for a period counted from a start day, and some terms count a stretch of inactivity. Here is what the data shows, with the company names.

A period counted from a start dayIC Markets, TickmillFind the start day: the deposit, the day the bonus is credited, or the account opening.
Time with no activityHFMThe account can end with no deposit, withdrawal or trade for a set time.

A broker can appear in more than one row, because the offers differ. A clock missing from the data is not a clock that does not exist.

Case 1: expiry

Read expiry in two parts. One is the date the offer itself ends. The other is how long a bonus you have received can be used, counted from a start day.

Some offers state a date for the offer itself. AXIORY’s terms give a bonus expiration date. BigBoss, HFM, IC Markets and Milton Markets have no end date in the data. That does not mean the offer runs for ever. IC Markets’s terms say it can modify, suspend or terminate the offer, and HFM’s say the campaign stays active until it is terminated or amended by the company.

For a period counted from a start day, the data shows these. IC Markets states one for its deposit bonus.

Each Deposit Bonus is valid for 60 calendar days from the date of deposit.

IC Markets, official page

What it means. Here the clock starts on the day you deposit, and the bonus is valid for 60 calendar days from then. It does not start on the day the offer opened or the day you registered.

Tickmill’s Welcome Account has its own period, also 60 days, counted from the day the account is opened according to the data. The two are not the same kind of count: one starts at a deposit, the other at an account opening. Check which day your own clock starts from.

Some offers have no period and no end date in the data. FXGT.com’s no-deposit bonus and deposit bonus have neither an end date nor a validity period in the data, and neither does BigBoss’s deposit bonus program. That is “not confirmed”, not “no limit”. Check the official page.

Caution

"No end date written" is not the same as "runs for ever". And a day count ends on a different date depending on where it starts: the deposit, the day the bonus is credited, or the account opening.

Case 2: inactivity

A clause that removes a bonus after a stretch of doing nothing is rare in the data. The one found is in HFM’s terms.

It is further noted that any Bonus Scheme accounts which remain inactive for a period of 60 (sixty) days i.e. no deposits or withdrawals or trading activity has been made within the above-mentioned period, shall be terminated by the Company without prior notice of termination to the Client.

HFM, official page

What it means. If a bonus account has no deposit, no withdrawal and no trade for 60 days, the terms say HFM will terminate it without telling you first. For the Top-up Bonus, the data has no fixed expiry date. So an offer that looks open-ended can still end if the account is left alone.

For the other offers in the tables, the data holds no inactivity clause. That means “not in the data”, not “there is none”. Check the terms on the official page.

Case 3: withdrawal

This is where offers differ most. What happens to the bonus when you withdraw, or move money out of the account, depends on the broker and the offer. First, the difference between “all removed” and “removed in proportion”, with made-up numbers.

Withdraw half of the balance before the conditions are metExample

Everything is removed

Credit before100
Credit after0

The remaining credit and the bonus-only profit are removed.

Removed in proportion

Credit before100
Credit after50

Only the matching share of the bonus is removed.

The numbers are made up to show the difference. They are not any broker's terms.

Here is what the data shows, by type.

A broker can appear in more than one row, because the offers differ. Which row fits your offer is in its own terms.

An example of the bonus being removed. What sets it off differs by broker. For Milton Markets’s deposit bonus, it is a withdrawal request or a transfer made before the conditions are met.

If you transfer funds out of the bonus account or request a withdrawal before meeting all conditions (90 days + lot requirements), any remaining bonus that has not met the conditions will be removed.

Milton Markets, official page

What it means. If you move money out of the bonus account, or ask to withdraw, before the 90-day holding period and the lot requirements are both met, the part of the bonus that has not met them is removed. Note that a transfer counts, not only a withdrawal.

An example of removal in proportion. HFM’s Top-up Bonus terms say it in one line.

The bonus removal is proportional to the percentage of the withdrawal amount.

HFM, official page

What it means. The bonus is cut by the same share as the share of the balance you withdraw. A small withdrawal removes a small part, and a full withdrawal removes all of it.

Some offers change by stage.

If a withdrawal of deposited funds or outgoing internal transfer (ITF) occurs before both unlock conditions are completed, all remaining credit will be removed immediately, and any bonus-only profits will be set to zero.

AXIORY, official page

What it means. If you withdraw your deposit, or send it out to another account, before both unlock conditions are done, all the remaining credit goes, and any profit made only from the bonus is set to zero. AXIORY’s terms also have a separate sentence for after the conditions are met, where the credit is reduced in proportion to the amount withdrawn. So the effect of the same action changes with the stage.

Last, the case where taking the money out ends the account itself.

Once the profit transfer is completed, the Welcome Account will be disabled and no further trading will be possible.

Tickmill, official page

What it means. After you transfer the profit out, the Welcome Account is disabled and you cannot trade on it any more. The account you were trading on is gone.

Point

The same "withdrawal" can remove everything, remove a share, behave differently by stage, or close the account. Before you withdraw or move money out of an account that holds a bonus, read the terms of that offer to see which type it is.

What to check before you apply

  1. Check whether an end date for the offer itself is written. If it is not, read whether the broker may change or end the offer.
  2. Check whether each bonus has its own validity period, and what day the count starts from.
  3. Check whether an account left unused can be ended.
  4. Check what happens when you withdraw or move money out: everything removed, a share removed, a change by stage, or the account closed.
  5. For anything this article calls “not in the data”, read the broker’s official page.

To compare withdrawal conditions by type, see Bonus withdrawal conditions compared. For how to read the terms of one offer, see How to read bonus withdrawal conditions. For the lists of offers, see No-deposit bonuses compared and Deposit bonuses compared.

Risks to keep in mind

Trading with leverage can lose money quickly. Using a bonus does not remove the loss on a trade. This article does not recommend any broker. Read the broker’s full terms before you open an account, and only trade with money you can afford to lose.
