Bonus withdrawal conditions compared

The headline of a bonus shows an amount and a few words such as “no deposit” or “100% bonus”. What really differs between offers is the withdrawal conditions behind it. This article sorts the different ways brokers write them into a few patterns and puts them side by side. Amounts and figures appear only in the tables and are not written in the text, because brokers can change them.

The bonus is offered by each broker, not by this site. The point here is not which broker is better but where to look in the terms and how to read what you find. Brokers are listed by name only. It is not a ranking.

Four questions to put to the terms

Whatever the bonus, you can read its withdrawal conditions as four questions. Asking the same four of every offer is what lets you compare brokers.

Four questions to put to the terms of any bonus
Question to askAnswers the terms giveWhere it matters
1. Can the bonus itself be withdrawn?Cannot / only after conditionsMost credits are for trading only
2. When can the profit be withdrawn?Any time / after conditions / within a limitVolume, trade count, a first deposit
3. What happens to the bonus if you withdraw? All removed / in proportion / account closedA withdrawal or a transfer out
4. How long can it be used?A set number of days / no expiry / the broker may change itThe start of the count

These are the patterns found in the terms this site has read. A broker can word things differently, so use the table to find the sentence, then read it in the official terms.

For how to read the terms of a single offer in detail, see How to read bonus withdrawal conditions. This article is for comparing the patterns across brokers.

An item missing from a table is one that could not be confirmed on the official pages. For those, check the broker’s official page. Even for what is shown, read the official terms again before you apply.

Question 1: can the bonus itself be withdrawn?

Many bonuses are credit for trading, not cash, and the terms say plainly that it cannot be taken out.

Bonus credit cannot be withdrawn or converted into a balance.

AXIORY, official page

What it means. The credit can sit in the account and back your trades, but it cannot be turned into a balance you withdraw. Whatever the headline amount, it is not money you can take out.

Some offers are different. Another broker describes a kind of bonus that can be withdrawn once its conditions are met.

This is a withdrawable bonus, meaning both the bonus amount and any profits can be withdrawn after you meet the stated conditions.

Milton Markets, official page

What it means. For this kind of bonus, the bonus itself and the profit can both be withdrawn, but only after the stated conditions are met. What the conditions are differs from offer to offer, so read them on that offer’s page. The same word, “bonus”, can mean very different things.

Question 2: when can the profit be withdrawn?

What happens to the profit made with a bonus also differs by broker.

Four ways the profit can be releasedExample

No condition

ProfitAny time

The terms say profit made with the bonus can be taken out freely.

Unlocked by conditions

ProfitAfter the conditions

Volume, number of trades or a first deposit must be done first. Until then the profit stays locked.

Within a limit

ProfitUp to a ceiling

Only a stated range of the profit can be moved out. The rest is not paid.

Moved, then the account ends

ProfitOnce

The profit is moved to another place, and the account that made it can no longer be used.

The length of each bar is drawn only to show the difference. It is not any broker's amount.

Some terms put no limit on it.

Profits created from the Top-up Bonus can be withdrawn with no restrictions.

HFM, official page

What it means. For this offer, the profit made with the bonus can be taken out without extra conditions. This applies to the profit only; the bonus itself is covered by question 1. Check the rest of the same page for anything else that applies.

Question 3: what happens to the bonus if you withdraw?

This is where offers differ the most. A withdrawal, or a transfer out of the account, can remove everything, remove a share, or end the account. The figure shows the first two side by side.

Withdraw half of the balance before the conditions are metExample

Everything is removed

Credit before100
Credit after0

The remaining credit and the bonus-only profit are removed.

Removed in proportion

Credit before100
Credit after50

Only the matching share of the bonus is removed.

The numbers are made up to show the difference. They are not any broker's terms.

One way of writing it is a removal in proportion to what you took out.

The bonus removal is proportional to the percentage of the withdrawal amount.

HFM, official page

What it means. The bonus shrinks in step with the share of the money you withdraw. A small withdrawal removes a small part of the bonus, and taking everything out removes all of it.

Another way is to remove everything if you move money before the conditions are done.

If a withdrawal of deposited funds or outgoing internal transfer (ITF) occurs before both unlock conditions are completed, all remaining credit will be removed immediately, and any bonus-only profits will be set to zero.

AXIORY, official page

What it means. If you withdraw your own deposit, or move money out to another account, before both unlock conditions are done, the rest of the credit goes at once, and so does the profit made from the bonus alone. Note that the sentence covers an internal transfer, not just a withdrawal.

Caution

The same word, "withdrawal", can wipe out the whole bonus under one offer and only a share of it under another. Before you withdraw or move money out of an account that has a bonus, check in that offer's terms which of the two applies.

A third pattern is that the account itself ends once the profit is moved out.

Once the profit transfer is completed, the Welcome Account will be disabled and no further trading will be possible.

Tickmill, official page

What it means. After the profit has been moved, the Welcome Account is switched off and cannot be traded any more. You can take the profit out, but you cannot keep trading in the same account.

What to check before you apply

  1. Check in the terms whether the bonus itself can be withdrawn.
  2. Check what must be done before the profit can be withdrawn, such as volume, number of trades or a first deposit, and think about whether your own trading can meet it.
  3. Check what happens to the bonus if you withdraw or move money out of the account.
  4. Check how long the bonus can be used and when the count starts.
  5. For anything missing from the tables, read the broker’s official page.

For how to read the terms of one offer, see How to read bonus withdrawal conditions. For the list of no-deposit offers, see No-deposit bonuses compared. For an example from one broker, see AXIORY no-deposit bonus conditions.

Risks to keep in mind

Trading with leverage can lose money quickly. Using a bonus does not remove the loss on a trade. This article does not recommend any broker. Read the broker’s full terms before you open an account, and only trade with money you can afford to lose.
